Last Tuesday evening the Emery High Lady Spartan volleyball team traveled to Monroe to face the South Sevier Lady Rams seeking to avenge an earlier loss. The two teams, both of whom were tied for the region lead before the game, played a hard fought battle throughout the night but when it was over South Sevier was once again victorious. The Rams won the match 3-1.
The first game was won by South Sevier 25-22 with the second game being won by the Rams by that same 25-22 score. Emery took the third game by the score of 30-28 before South Sevier closed out the match by that same 25-22 score for the third time that evening.
In game one, South Sevier led 14-7 to take a commanding early lead. Emery fought back to narrow the gap at 17-13. Trailing 21-16, Emery took their first lead of the night at 22-21. Although they had fought back after trailing big, the Spartans were unable to claim the first game as the Rams scored the next four points to win.
In game two, the two teams were tied at 10-10 and at 15-15 and at 20-20. South Sevier then closed out the second game by winning five of the last seven points. In the third game, Emery was down early at 6-0 and then at 15-9 and at 19-11. Emery narrowed the score to 19-16 and then to 22-18 and then 24-23. Tied the score at 26-26, trailed at 28-27 and then scored the final three points with Camrey Johnson serving out the win.
In the fourth game, Emery went up 6-2 and led until South Sevier grabbed the lead at 14-12. The two teams battled evenly until; Emery tied the game at 22-22. South Sevier then scored the final three points to grab the win.
In Region 15, Emery is now a half game behind region leaders South Sevier and San Juan. The Rams and the Broncos possess 5-1 records while Emery is at 5-2. Emery’s lone game this week is against North Sevier on Wednesday night at home.
The 2-A state championships begin just two weeks from this Wednesday with region 15 matched up with region 13 in the opening round. Region 13 just happens to be the other good volleyball region with Delta and Enterprise in that region. It is an advantage to finish in the top of the region.
