This Friday night brings the end of the regular season for Utah high school football. Next week the playoffs begin but the two local teams won’t be heading to the play-offs this year as both are in the rebuilding process. Carbon High started off the season with a new head coach. The Dinos won their first three games of the season but then a tough region schedule slowed down their progress. The team should continue to improve with time.
Emery High started the season with a small senior class and ended the season playing a lot of sophomores in varsity contests. The rebuilding year for the Spartans might not look good on paper but the players are better today than when practice began in August.
The Spartans will travel to Price this Friday night to close out the 3-A North region season and both teams come in with very similar results over the past six weeks. Both teams are 0-5 in region action and both would like to end the season with a win.
Last week Emery played a non-region contest at Canyon View High School in Cedar City. The Falcon offense was operating in high gear and scored the first six times they had the ball. Canyon View won 55-7.
Emery’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter with senior fullback Matt Mecham scoring on a 1-yard run capping off a 51-yard drive. Mecham finished the game with 74 yards rushing and with 16 tackles on defense to lead the Spartans as he has done all season.
The game this Friday night will start at 7 pm and both teams want to win. This promises a good games for the players, parents and fans.
