It was just a year ago that the Emery High boys cross country team did not place at region and therefore did not go to state. How different a year can be.
In the just completed region 15 cross country meet held at the Moab golf course, the Spartan boys finished second in region behind San Juan with Ty Funk leading the way with a third place finish.
On the girl’s side, North Sevier continued their dominance in distance races by easily outrunning San Juan and Emery, the two teams that finished second and third. North Sevier scored 42 points with San Juan next with 54 points followed by Emery with 76 points. Grand scored 83 points and South Sevier scored 259.
Emery’s top two girl runners finished very well as Erin Hurst finished third overall and Tarryn Parkins finished fourth. Emery also took the times of Laura Burke, Hannah Seeley and Allyson Woolsey. Also competing for the Lady Spartans were Valerie Chynoweth, Lexy Cox, Jacie Huntington, Carlee Anderson and Triston Wayman.
San Juan scored 54 points to lead the boy’s race with emery right behind with 64 points followed by North Sevier with 77 points. Grand scored 92, South Sevier 101 and Wasatch Academy 124.
McKoy Christiansen was the second boy finisher for Emery followed by Daryl Guymon, Joseph Spendlove and Wyatt Cox.
Also competing for the boys were Alex Stilson, Beau Ivie, Lane Taylor, Jake Jensen, Tanyon Allred, Kaden Allred, Brady Dale, Ethan Winter, Travis Fehlberg, Jacob Huntsman, Nathan Urie, Garret Stilson, Kayden Parkins, Koy Jensen and Nate Gilbert.
The teams will now travel to Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City this Wednesday for the state finals. Girls will start at 11:30 am and the boys at 12:30 pm.
