The Emery High cross country teams traveled to Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City last Wednesday and competed along with every other qualifying high school and runners across the state in the state championship races. Ten team state champions were crowned after the 10 races were concluded with the crowning occurring next door at Highland High School where the races concluded.
The 2-A girl’s race was dominated by North Summit High School. North Summit scored 40 points while second place Enterprise scored 118 points. San Juan of region 15 finished third to have the best finish from the Spartans region. North Sevier was seventh and the Lady Spartans finished ninth.
Sophomore Erin Hurst finished fifth for the second straight year to lead the Emery team with fellow sophomore Tarryn Parkins improving her finish by one spot to 17th. Both runners improved their times over last season’s finish.
Also placing for the Spartans were Laura Burke in 51st place, Hannah Seely in 60th and Valerie Chynoweth in 62nd place.
The Emery boys cross country team returned to the final meet after being absent for several years. The Spartans placed in 11th place. Millard High won the race with 42 points followed by Rowland Hall with 74 points. North Sevier had the best region finish, finishing seventh with 193 points. San Juan finished just ahead of the Spartans.
Ty Funk, a freshman, led the team with a time of 18:12 and finished 28th. McKoy Christiansen was second for the Spartans followed by Daryl Guymon, Joseph Spendlove and Wyatt Cox. All will return next season to help the Spartans improve on their finish.
