The Emery County School Board met for their November meeting at Cleveland Elementary. The school district received excellent remarks about their auditors report.
The school board accepted resignations from Kacie Healy and Cassie Taylor. The school board approved for hire, Kathryn Horrocks, Johnny Nielson, Andrea West, Rebecca Jorgensen, Tiffany Hanson and Kathy Mecham.
The board made changes to their food sales and vending machines policies. This is to be in compliance with the new federal guidelines for Smart Snacks. A revision to the attendance an truancy intervention was made. There was a new law passed by the 2014 legislature concerning excusing students from school.
Principal Jerel Lofley gave the principal’s report. Cleveland Elementary did well on the SAGE tests. They were above average for language arts and reading and a little below the average in science and math. Cleveland Elementary has a new reading program called Road to Success. It encourages students to read at least 20 minutes a day. The school set a goal to read 720,000 minutes. Student reading 20 minutes five days a week will receive a ticket. The ticket is turned in for a reward and a chance to win the grand prize drawing. Students who read seven days a week receive two tickets towards the drawing. The prizes were donated by local businesses. Cleveland Elementary has read approximately 240,000 minutes, 33 percent of their annual goal. Cleveland Elementary held their annual Veteran’s Day program on Nov. 10.
Superintendent Kirk Sitterud reported, Nov. 19 is national education support staff professions day. Superintendant Sitterud thanked all of the support staff in the Emery County School District.
