Sports stuff by Gary Arrington

By GARY ARRINGTON

Fantasy sports is a little about skill and a lot about luck, always has been and more than likely always will be. The skill part comes from knowing the history of the players, the likelihood of how successful they are going to be in the upcoming season and the strength and weaknesses of the teams they are scheduled to play. The luck part comes from the injuries that always occur to the player themselves, to their teammates and to their opponents. It is not easy having luck on your side.
This season I had a very early draft pick and the shot at a very good player, maybe the best player in the league. The skill part was deciding which one and the luck part was being right. This season I chose Jamaal Charles of the Kansas City Chiefs with my pick after the player right before me chose Adrian Peterson. As it turned out I was very, very lucky since Peterson was my guy if he would have been available. Whew!
Peterson started strong and then his season was abruptly ended after his child rearing techniques became public. As it turned out, luck was on my side when I did not have to make a choice.
Later in the draft I was not quite so lucky. I needed a backup running back and this time I took a guy that would miss the first two weeks of the season for disciplinary reasons but would then be available to play, a player that had over time been a top notch running back. This guy was in a video with his soon to be wife, a video that has changed his income and his life and my fantasy season. For whatever the reason the girl friend married the player. Ray Rice is maybe now on permanent leave from the league and I didn’t have a backup running back.
The player that has saved my season is Pittsburgh Steeler running back La’Veon Bell. To be honest with you, I got more lucky than skillful in this choice. Bell has turned into a star and I benefit each and every week.
This season has been up and down; I either win big or lose by one. I will finish the regular season a game out of first place in my division but the playoffs will allow me to save the year with just a little bit of luck.
I would have had a great season if I possibly could have drafted at least one top 10 receiver but as it is I ended up with no receiver ranked better than number 34 in the league. They were supposed to be better than that but they were not as it ended up. Despite my skill, or apparently the lack thereof, I still needed luck and I didn’t have quite as much of that as I needed to be more successful.
Maybe next year. I last won about five years ago and I did that with skill or so I want to believe but if I can find either just a little more skill or a lot more luck, I can still be successful. The hope of tomorrow is what keeps us all going and I am no different.
