"Emily Olsen drives to the hoop for Emery."

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

The Emery High Lady Spartans started off the season struggling to handle the press and trying to find a way to score but by the end of the week, the team was playing well and confidently, well enough in fact to win three straight games.
Uintah defeated Emery on Tuesday as the season started 35-39 as the Spartans almost had as many turnovers as they had points. But Thursday came around and the Lady Spartans defeated Richfield at the Spartan Center by the score of 50-42.
Emery then traveled to Carbon High to play Manti and Pine View on Friday and Saturday with Carbon playing the opposite team on those two days. A strange thing happened though, a very strange thing indeed; Pine View did not show, they simply stayed home to the best of my knowledge. Emery defeated Manti easily by the score of 70-45 and then host Carbon lost to the Spartans 45-43.
Carbon played a double header on Saturday as they filled in for the Panthers. They first played their scheduled game with Manti, which they won, and then they played Emery, a game that Pine View was supposed to play. Hats off to the coach and his team.
After trailing after the first quarter against Manti by the score of 18-16, the Lady Spartans returned after the break and absolutely played one of the best quarters of basketball that I have ever seen on the high school level. The score said that Emery won the period 21-6 but the score doesn’t tell the whole story.
Emery opened with a 7-0 run and ended with a 10-0 run and in between they played as well as a team can play. The Spartans had great movement of the ball which resulted in a good shot selection which resulted in easy baskets. In addition the Spartan defense acted as a unit and the Templars never knew what hit them as Emery denied them anything.
