The Green River High boys basketball team went into the Christmas break by winning their last two games of 2014 while the Lady Pirates suffered a loss in their final game of the calendar year at Duchesne High. The boys defeated Grand High 78-50 and Tabiona 74-69 in double overtime while the girls were losing to Duchesne 54-26.
Balanced scoring was the secret for the boys in their two wins as four players in each game finished in double figure scoring led by Chance Pfander in each game. Pfander scored 21 points in the win over Tabiona and scored 14 points in the Grand game, the same as TJ Hughes. Also scoring in double figures against Grand were Jonathan Mendez and Nick Corrigan with 12 points each. Scoring in double figures against Tabiona were Hughes with 16 points, Mendez with 11 points and Tyrell
Shumway with 10 points. Grand led Green River 30-29 at the half as the two teams battled evenly throughout that period of play. The third quarter was all Pirates though as they blew open the close game by winning the period 30-4 to take a 25 point advantage going into the final period. The Pirates won that final period 19-16 to defeat the visiting team.
Also scoring in the Grand game were Corbin Mecham and Jovani Flores with 9 points each, Tyrell Shumway with 6 points and Jacob Cox with 2 points.
Green River and Tabiona were tied at the end of regulation 58-58 as the two teams had battled evenly throughout the game. The Pirates were up by two points after the first quarter while Tabiona was up by three at the half. Both teams scored 18 points in the third quarter and then Green River outscored Tabiona by three in the final period to tie the game. Each team scored six points in the first overtime and the Pirates won the game by winning the second overtime 10-5. Also scoring in this game for Green River were Mecham with 9 points, Flores with 4 points and Corrigan with 2 points.
Duchesne was too much for the Lady Pirates in the game at Duchesne. Although Green River led after the first quarter 8-7, it turned out that the rest of the game was all Duchesne. Duchesne won the second quarter by 11 points, the third quarter by 16 points and the final quarter by two points to easily win the game.
Kira Engleman was the leading scorer in the game with 9 points. Savannah Williams added 7 points, Maribel Escalante scored 6 points and Cassidee Moore and Cassidy Bastian each scored 2 points. Both Pirate teams are back in action on Saturday Jan. 3, 2015 with road games. The boys travel to San Juan High School while the girls travel to Manila High School.
