Huntington City hears options for displaced coal miners

By GARY ARRINGTON Staff Writer

The Huntington City Council held their December meeting and discussed an abbreviated schedule before they adjourned their meeting for their annual city employee Christmas Party held at the Town Hall. In the meeting, Ethan Migliori representing his work with the state of Utah and not his work as a county commissioner, was first on the agenda and came to talk about options that the soon-to-be unemployed coal miners from Deer Creek would have. After the first of the year, Workforce Services will host meetings to help discuss options for those that need help after the mine closure.
The Council then went into a public hearing as required by law to discuss potential projects that could be funded by CDBG, a state low-income group that offers help with potential projects.
Mayor Hilary Gordon thanked all that helped with the annual city Christmas Party that was held at the city fire station earlier in the month. The party was well attended by many residents and all appeared to have a good time eating soup and visiting with Santa. The Mayor wished all a very Merry Christmas as did each councilperson in their individual time.
Jerry Livingston mentioned the Huntington fire department does not own a “jaws of life” and that the members of the department would like them to help with accidents. This will be brought up again in the new year. Councilperson Gloria Wilson thanked all who helped with the “Turkey Trot” as it was well attended and all had a good time running or walking the 5K race. Julie Jones mentioned the City trail from the complex to 400 East is now usable.
