Over the Holiday break, the two Emery High basketball teams faced off against their opponents from Carbon High School on Tuesday Dec. 30 with the boys teams playing in Price and the ladies teams playing at the Spartan Center, neither home team won.
The Lady Dinos defeated Emery 58-51 in an afternoon start while the Emery Spartans defeated the Carbon boys 74-56 in a night game.
Dillon Wilstead led a trio of Spartans that scored in double figures with 20 points himself, including sinking four three-point shots and Emery was too much for the Dinos despite Cole Fossat scoring 18 points for the home team. Tyson Roper with 17 points and Tai Justice with 10 points helped power the Spartans to the victory. Brad Williams with 15 points also finished the game in double figures for the Dinos.
Carbon led after the first quarter 17-14 as the Dinos did a good job of running their offense and controlling the tempo. The Spartans finished the game over the final three quarters by playing their game and looking much better as a team than the previous couple of games before the break. Emery played good team ball as the players allowed the game to come to them instead of forcing things.
Emery won the second period 20-12 to lead at the half 34-29 and then the Spartans won the third quarter 21-10 to blow the game open. Emery and Carbon battled during the fourth quarter but the Spartans again won the period and Emery the game. The Spartans sank nine more shots from the field in gaining the win.
Also scoring for Emery were Beau Roundy with 7 points in his first real action of the season, Kevin Butler with 6 points, Ridge Nielson and Zach Jorgensen with 5 points each and Bowdie Jacobsen and Koby Butler with 2 points each.
Also scoring for the Dinos were Peyton Fausett with 9 points, Andrew Kotter with 6, Chase Morgan and Kyle Quinton with 3 points each and Tyler Moynier with 2 points.
Back at Emery High School, the Lady Dinos won the opening quarter 19-14 and then hung on throughout the game to grab the win. Emery narrowed the gap to 32-30 at the half but Carbon won the third quarter by five points and the two teams tied the final period to give the Dinos the edge.
Lindsey Blanc scored 18 points to lead Carbon with balanced scoring by the rest of the Dino team. Taylor Oliver scored 12 points, Jordan Scoggins scored 9 points and Beth Child and McKenna Sorenson scored 8 points each.
Morgan Hilam scored 3 points.
Ashton Bell led the Emery effort as the senior forward had a good day dropping shots and scoring points.
Bell finished the game with 19 points. Senior center Bailey Rasmussen also scored in double figures with 13 points and Bailey pulled down 11 rebounds to lead both teams in this category.
Emily Olsen scored 6 points while Bayler Griffin, Camrey Johnson, Cassidy Labrum and Lexi Huntington each scored three points in the game.
The Lady Spartans will travel to Beaver on Jan. 6 to play the Beavers and then they will open region play at San Juan on Thursday night.
The boys hosted Union High last night on Monday Jan. 5 and then the team will travel to North Sanpete on Wednesday night and then are scheduled to play Carbon again this Friday night in Castle Dale.
