GREEN RIVER: John Ralphs Powell died peacefully of natural causes on Jan. 3, 2015 in Salt Lake City, Utah. A lifetime resident of Green River, Utah, John was born to Jess Powell and Hazel Ralphs on Nov. 1, 1931. He married Joyce Beth Wayman in Ferron, Utah on the 17th of October 1959. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple.
John was a happy child and enjoyed fishing and sluffing Sunday School. He played on the Green River High School basketball team and was the Senior Class President. John joined the US Navy and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954 with a recommendation to re-enlist, but he chose to return home and continue working on the family farm. He was a hard working, kind hearted man who served his country, community, church, and family throughout his lifetime. He will be remembered as a generous, loving person who put others’ needs before his own.
John was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Beth Wayman and two sisters, Norma Tandy, and Eda Mea Powell. He is survived by his brother Jesse Powell and sister Molly Scoville, children Christine (Keith) Ludwig, Bill Powell, Amy (Allan) Versteeg, 11 grandchildren, and five great grand children.
Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 9, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Green River LDS Church. A viewing will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Green River LDS Church and on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Interment will be in the Elgin Cemetery in Green River. Services are in the care of Fausett Mortuary.
