Boys defeat Union and Carbon: drop game to N. Sanpete

Despite winning two out of three basketball games last week, despite being one of the favorites to challenge for the 2-A title this season, the Emery High boys’ basketball team is still in a state of flux as they are still working hard to become the best that they can be. Emery defeated Union High on Monday night of last week in an overtime game by the score of 51-48, lost at North Sanpete on Wednesday night by the score of 59-51 and then defeated the Carbon Dinos in Castle Dale by the score of 76-67.
Emery barely defeated the Cougars as Dillon Wilstead had a basket and a free throw in the Spartans final two possessions of the game. Union possesses a 5-8 season record with several of their losses coming from 1-A schools. Emery won the first quarter 13-9 after having turnovers on three of their first four possessions and then they finished the quarter by scoring on seven of their final nine possessions. Tyson Roper with 13 points and Wilstead with 12 points led the Spartan effort in this game.
Against the Hawks in Mt Pleasant, Emery won just the third quarter 11-7 while losing every other period as they suffered the loss. Emery made just 11 of 22 free throws in this game and 17 of 71 field goal attempts. Roper led the scoring for the Spartans in this game with 15 points.
Emery then closed out the week by defeating the Dinos in Castle Dale in a close game. The Spartans defeated the Dinos a couple weeks ago by a large margin. With just over two minutes to go in the first quarter, the Spartans were down 17-7 when Coach Todd Jeffs replaced four starters with four JV starters. Joining Wilstead on the floor were Bowdie Jacobsen, Kolton Butler, Koby Butler and Zach Jorgensen. Emery scored the final seven points of the period to trail 17-14.
Going with the same fivesome in the second quarter, Emery scored the first nine points of the period as they started with a 15-1 run. Emery won the second quarter 27-12 and led at the half 41-29. Jacobsen scored 14 points in just over 10 minutes of play to pace the Spartans in this half with Wilstead right behind with 13 points. Jacobsen hit four three-pointers.
Emery went back to the starters in the second half and the Spartan lost the third quarter 16-12 before winning the final period 23-22 and getting the win. Wilstead scored 15 points in the second half and 28 points for the game to lead all Spartan scorers. Jacobsen finished with 17 points and Koby Butler with 10 points.
Also scoring in the Union game were Tai Justice and Beau Roundy with 8 points, Kolton with 5 points, Ridge Nielson with 3 points and Kevin Butler with 2 points. Also scoring in the North Sanpete game were Wilstead with 10 points, Nielson and Roundy with 8 points each, Koby with 4 points and Jacobsen and Justice with 3 points each. Also scoring against Carbon were Kolton with 6 points, Roper with 4 points, Nielson and Jorgensen with 3 points each, Kevin and Roundy with 2 points each and Justice with 1 point.
Emery plays just a single game this week as region begins. On Friday night the Spartans will host San Juan in a 7 p.m. start.
