Despite shooting only 26 percent in the game, the Emery High Lady Spartans defeated the San Juan Broncos 51-31 in Blanding last week. After leading 20-15 at the half, Emery easily won the second half 31-16 to win their first region game of the season. Emery was scheduled to play their final preseason game Tuesday night in Beaver but that game was cancelled due to player tragedy at the school.
Emery’s defense limited the Broncos to just three different scorers in the game. Basically all night the Broncos had a really tough time executing anything on the offensive side of the ball. Emery’s Bailey Rasmussen, Ashton Bell and Bayler Griffin combined for 10 steals in the game which limited the Bronco offense and assisted the Spartan offense.
Bell had three of those steals and then was also the leading scorer with 11 points and also pulled down 7 rebounds. Rasmussen had four steals, 9 points and also pulled down 7 rebounds. Griffin, besides three steals, also scored 7 points, had 7 rebounds and dished out 6 assists for perhaps her best game as a Lady Spartan.
Also scoring in the game were Emily Olsen with 8 points, Camrey Johnson with 6 points, Lainee Jensen with 4 points, Cassidy Labrum with 3 points and Jessica Olsen and Aniston Curtis with 2 points each.
This week Emery hosts North Sevier on Tuesday night and then will travel to South Sevier on Thursday night.
