Ice fishing clinic and outing offered Jan. 16 – 17
You can learn the basics of ice fishing at a free clinic on Jan. 16. Then, the morning after the clinic, you can try out your new fishing skills at a free fishing trip.
Those who attend the clinic will learn about staying warm and comfortable on the ice, safety concerns and precautions, the type of fishing gear you’ll need, how and where to drill a hole, and the best rigs and bait to use.
After teaching the basics, clinic instructors will share advanced tips and tricks for some of the best ice fishing destinations in east-central Utah. These include Scofield, Mammoth and Joes Valley reservoirs, and Electric Lake.
The Division of Wildlife Resources is sponsoring the free event. The Jan. 16 clinic will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Department of Natural Resources building, 319 N. Carbonville Road in Price. The Jan. 17 fishing trip will take place at a local water where the best fishing is being reported.
If you don’t have your own fishing equipment, no problem-the DWR will loan you the ice fishing equipment you need.
Everyone is welcome
Walt Maldonado, regional wildlife recreation specialist for the DWR, says the clinic is for everyone, regardless of experience or skill level.
“If you’ve never experienced ice fishing,” Maldonado says, “the clinic will give you the confidence you need to select the right gear and rigs for a lifetime of ice fishing fun.”
Maldonado says each water in east-central Utah requires a slightly different ice-fishing approach. The techniques and bait that catch fish at one water may not work at another. Experienced instructors will share insights that will boost your success at each water.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an advanced ice angler,” Maldonado says. “The tips you learn will help you catch more and bigger fish.”
