The Emery High wrestling team hosted Gunnison last Thursday evening at the Spartan Center and the visiting team came out the victor by the score of 48-33. Emery’s final match of the season will take place Tuesday Jan. 27 when the Spartans host Manti.
Emery won five matches, Gunnison won six matches and three were decided by forfeits with Emery winning this way at 220 pounds and Gunnison winning at 160 pounds and 182 pounds.
Zach World at 106 pounds started the night off well for Emery as he pinned his man with 8.5 seconds remaining in the second period giving Emery a 6-0 lead. World had gotten both a takedown and a near fall in the first period and was winning by a 10-2 score at the time of the pin.
McKoy Christiansen at 120 pounds won his match with a pin at the halfway point of the second round. McKoy led 8-0 after the first round before recording the win.
Ashton Dieli at 145 pounds also had a second round pin with his coming with 1:13 left in the period. Dieli had built a 10-3 lead at the time of the pin. Dieli’s opponent had three escapes in the first period for all his points as it appeared that Ashton was working on his takedown moves.
Matt Mecham had the Spartans last pin of the match at 170 pounds and staying true to form, it came just a little bit faster than the last one.
Matt’s pin came with 1:39 left in the second round.
Nathan Urie, Emery’s entrant at 132 pounds and the subject of a recent Deseret News article, recorded a decision over his opponent by the score of 6-4 after securing a reversal in the final round just before time expired.
Also wrestling for the Spartans in this match were Steven Brown at 113 pounds, Justin Jennings at 126 pounds, Tel Gardner at 138 pounds, Delan Funk at 152 pounds, Lakota Clark at 195 pounds and Ty Mecham at 285 pounds. Mecham weighed 205 pounds at the weigh-in and did not quite have enough bulk to wrestle at this weight, he normally wrestles in the 220 class.
