The Green River Lady Pirates defeated Monument Valley 71-44 last week and will play Monticello and Whitehorse in their final week of region basketball before the 1-A Utah State basketball championships begin next week in Richfield.
The Lady Pirates will host region leader Monticello on Tuesday and then will travel south to Whitehorse High on Friday and will play a double header with the boy’s teams that night.
Monticello and Whitehorse are the other two good basketball programs in region 19 and the games this week will help decide the seeding for the tournament the following week.
Against Monument Valley, the girls started off slowly. They trailed after the first quarter 20-19 and had a small lead at the half by the score of 33-29.
Green River put their opponent away in the third quarter by winning the period 24-5 and then closed out the game by winning the final period 14-10.
Four Pirates ended up in double figures in this game led by Kira Engleman with 18 points. Engleman played a complete game as she also had six assists and seven steals in the game.
Also scoring in double figures were Savannah Williams with 17 points, Cassidee Moore with 13 points and Maribel Escalante with 12 points. Escalante had four 3-pointers in the game for her points and she also added six assists. Williams was the leading rebounder with 11 rebounds.
Also scoring in the game were Cassidy Bastian with two points, Justice Hadfield with two points and Presley Lovato with seven points.
The boys team won their two games last week convincingly as they defeated Pinnacle first by the score of 62-29 and then they defeated Monument Valley by the score of 88-52. The third quarter in each game was the game killer as the Pirates easily won the period and put the game away. They outscored Pinnacle 22-7 in the period after leading 24-8 at the half and then they outscored Monument Valley 32-11 after leading 29-23 at the half.
Against Monument Valley four players ended up in double figure scoring led by TJ Hughes with 19 points and followed by Jon Mendez and Corbin Mecham with 16 points each and chance Pfander with 15 points. Also scoring were Jacob Cox with seven points, Nick Corrigan with six points, Nate Cox with four points, Jovani Flores with three points and Joe Serafin with two points.
Leading the scoring against Pinnacle was Hughes with 14 points and Mecham with 11 points. Pfander had nine points followed by Serafin, Mendez, Flores and Tyrell Shumway with six points each along with Corrigan with four points.
The boys team will travel to Whitehorse with the girls on Feb. 13. They will finish out the regular season on Feb. 26 with a home game against Monticello and begin the state tourney on March 4-7 at the Sevier Valley Center.
