On Feb. 5-6, a group of Russian community development professionals visited Green River.
This was one of several stops on a multi-week trip to the United States where the visitors studied and observed community development and volunteerism practices in rural America. The trip received sponsorship and support from the Eurasia Foundation, the Rural Community Assistance Corporation, the Ohio Rural Community Assistance Program and Epicenter.
During their stay in Green River, the Russian group took time to visit with various volunteer organizations, including the Beautification Committee, Volunteer Fire Department, and the Latter-Day Saints Relief Society.
They also met with Epicenter staff, the local Quilt Guild, the Green River Positive Action Community Team Afterschool Program, and the Green River High School Student Council.
Additional activities included an introduction to WealthWorks economic development methods by RCAC staff; a visit to the John Wesley Powell River History Museum and Green River Archives, where they met with staff and learned about local and regional history; a trip to Sego Canyon, where they viewed ancient pictographs and petroglyphs; and a mule-drawn wagon ride around Green River, among others.
On the night of Feb. 5, a community potluck dinner was held in their honor.
The event was well-attended. Thanks to all the Green River residents who contributed their time and efforts to make the Russian visit a success.
Green River City has been making an extra effort towards the economic develop-ment of their city.
The Green River Refinery is coming soon and other economic opportunities are being explored.
