GREEN RIVER/PRICE-Longtime resident of Green River, Tommy Jene Hastings, age 88, passed away Feb. 28, 2015 after struggling with prostate cancer since 2000. Tommy returned to His Maker and is finally at peace.
He was born May 12, 1926 to Howard J. Hastings and Effie May Beebe in Elgin, Utah (Grand County) at the Hastings Ranch. Married Vera May Rice, March 18, 1950 in Stanwood, Washington.
Tom graduated from Green River High School and had to return from the service to attend his own graduation. He honorably served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre with the Amphibious Assault Unit 10. Tom was a tireless worker who worked alongside his father as a farmer/rancher and as a foreman for VCA in the uranium mines for 7 years. He later went to work running a service station and serving as a City Marshall for Green River. Tommy rounded out his career as heavy equipment operator/foreman with the Utah Department of Transportation with 29 years of service.
Tom loved his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his special four legged friends, Tuff (a wolf dog), Koko (a Shih-Tzu) and his beloved Trixie. He loved his history, especially stories of the early settlers, visiting with friends, telling war stories, and playing solitaire.
Tom was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 63 years and they were in the process of honoring him with his 60 year pin. He was a Past Master of Orient Lodge # 15 F. & A.M. on four different occasions. Tom was a member of the Knights Templar of the Charles Fred Jennings Commandery No. 6., Price York Rite and Carbon Lodge # 16 F and A.M. He was also a life member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion.
Survived by his wife, Vera Hastings; children, Howard L. Hastings and Shirley Tsaousis of Hurricane, Utah, Margeret J. and Terry L. Cook of Clifton, Colo., Meliss A. Hastings and Frank Trease of Price and Thomas J. and Twyla Hastings, of Price; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
Public Masonic funeral services will be held, Thursday, March 5, 2015, 2 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home (233 East Main Street) in Price. Family will receive friends at Mitchell’s Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to service. Interment, Wellington City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price where friends are always welcome daily and may share memories of Tommy online at www.mitchellfuneralhome.net.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Shriners Children Hospital or any Masonic affiliation.
