The Emery High girls’ golf team opened the 2015 season in Moab last week and came home with the first of which they hope are many victories. Although the team that is heavily laden with underclass players is not up to mid-season form yet, there is still much to be excited for as the season begins. Coach Tom Hansen should be happy with the quantity and quality of players that have come out for the team this season. Sophomore Sydnee Guymon continued from where she left off last season and took first place in the first match of the season. Sophomore Sara Swasey finished the match in third place. The two players paced the team to the win as the team shot a score of 95. They score according to the stableford scoring system.
The other Emery players at the Moab match were sophomore Sydney Timothy, sophomore Erin Oliverson, junior Alyssa Garrett and junior Sabryna Mead. Also on the team this season are the following players; senior Hailey Johnson, sophomores Taijah Price and Brettlyn Tuttle and freshman Kammee Swasey. There could be more players as the season begins. The team will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to St George this week to play at the site of this year’s closing state tournament.
Girls golf uses the Modified Stableford rules. Modified Stableford rules differ from stroke play the more used method of scoring. Under the rules the objective is to score the highest number of points. A score of even par would gain 5 points. A score of 1 under (birdie) would score 6 points. A score of 1 over (bogie) would gain 4 points, etc.
