On April 20, 2013 the Utah Peace Officers Association unveiled “The Fallen Peace Officer Trail” just north of Moab. Proceeds raised at these rides go towards scholarships for fallen officers children. This past week at the fallen police officer ride, Deputy Jeremiah Johnson from the Emery County Sheriff’s Office was honored.
Several of Deputy Johnson’s family members were in attendance as well as members from the Emery County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Johnson passed away on May 27, 2003 from injuries sustained in a traffic accident while on duty.
Emery County Sheriff Greg Funk said, “This year they honored 14 fallen officers. We were proud to have Deputy Johnson among those honored. Seventeen members of the Johnson family were able to attend and Jeremiah’s father Randy Johnson was one of the speakers and did a really good job. Each mile is dedicated to a different officer. There was a picture of the officer at the mile marker and the cause of their death. They offer a family ride and then one of the ride days is open to the public to follow the trail and honor each of the officers. Several of our officers were in attendance at the event.
“It’s a very pretty ride. They have a lunch for the families of the officers. This year it was held at a local motel and catered by the Moab Brewery. There were 14 booths set-up which were dedicated to each of the officers. Rocky Mountain ATV donated the use of two side-by-sides so the families could be taken down the trail to spend time at the site where their officer was being honored. It was a very somber occasion. It rained a lot and it was muddy. We would like to thank all of the officers who have given the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our citizens,” said Sheriff Funk.
