The Emery High Lady Spartan softball team won just one game out of three played last week as the 2015 season is rapidly coming to close. Playing three straight games on the road saw the Spartans lose at region champion San Juan with a loss in a non-region contest at Carbon following and finally the team closed out the week with a region win at North Sevier. The final score at San Juan was 11-1, at Carbon was 11-3 and at North Sevier was 12-7.
In Salina, North Sevier scored first as they went up 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Emery responded with two runs in the top of the fourth inning but the Wolves tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Emery added another in the top of the sixth inning only to see North Sevier add two in the bottom of the inning to lead 4-3 going into the seventh.
In the seventh inning, Jessica Mason led off the inning by getting on first due to an error. Skyler Sitterud followed with a fielder’s choice. Kambrie Hinkins and Taylor Payne then singled followed by a walk to Ashton Bell. After Gentry Noyes got out, Carlie Robinson singled and Jacie Huntington got on base due to another Wolves error. Jarica Huntington then made the final out of the inning. Emery scored four runs to lead by three.
North Sevier then scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score and send the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Mason again led off but this time she was out on a ground ball.
Sitterud then got hit by a pitch followed by walks to Hinkins and Payne to load the bases. Bell then hit her second homerun of the game, this time a grand slam and Emery had regained the lead. Robinson doubled later in the inning and scored as the Spartans scored five runs in the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth inning North Sevier was able to do nothing and Emery got out of town with the win. With the victory Emery clinched fourth place in region 15 as they will play North Sevier for the final time this Wednesday in Castle Dale at the high school. Emery will face Uintah on the road first though as the Spartans will travel to Vernal on Tuesday to play a non-region contest.
