It was rainy, sometimes it was really rainy, it was cold and it was at times very breezy but weather aside the Utah State High School track championships were held last week at the BYU facility. For the local schools, the Green River boys finished in sixth in the 1-A boys meet, the Lady Pirates finished 16th in the 1-A girls meet and the Emery High Lady Spartans finished seventh in the 2-A girls meet. The Emery boys didn’t place as no Spartan finished in the scoring.
North Summit won the 2-A boys followed by Delta and South Summit. Millard High, led by runner Anna Camp, won the 2-A girls and they were followed by North Summit and North Sevier. Anna Camp won the 3200 meter race, the 1600 meter race, the 800 meter race and the 400 meter race to score 40 points for her team, quite a feat.
Panguitch won both the 1-A girls and the 1-A boys with the girls being done in dominant fashion. The Panguitch girls outscored second place Altamont 185 to 55 as their athletes scoring points everywhere, quite an accomplishment for a small school. Bryce Valley was third for the girls.
The Panguitch boys beat out Milford for the boy’s title, 86 points to 67 points with Duchesne scoring 66 points and finishing third.
Junior Paytn Jeffs was the lone individual state champion for the Spartans as she topped the leader board in the 2-A girl’s high jump with a jump of 5’4″. Ashlyn Allred scored the most points for Emery High as she finished second in the very competitive 100 meters and third in the 200 meters. Erin Hurst was the only other Emery High individual to place as she finished fifth in the 3200 meters. The Emery High girls 4×400 relay team and the sprint medley relay team each finished sixth. The medley relay team consisted of Jeffs, Laciejo Funk, Hurst and Allison Woolsey. The other team consisted of Jeffs, Allred, Hurst and Woolsey.
The Green River 4×100 meter relay team won that race and were state champions with Joe Serafin, Kyle Johnson, Tyrell Shumway and Wyatt Norman doing the running. Tyrell Shumway was the state champion in the javelin with a throw of 167 feet.
Also scoring for Green River were Corbin Mecham finishing fourth in the shot put, Serafin fifth in the 100 meters, Johnson sixth in the 800 meters and eighth in the 100 meters and Jon Mendez fifth in the high jump. Cassidee Moore finished fourth in the 800 meters and scored the only points for the Lady Pirates.
