For the Emery High Spartan football team last Friday night it was the opening of region play, it was the Coal Bucket game and it was the game against their closest rival. The Spartans prevailed on all accounts as they won the game 41-7. With the win, their record in the Coal Bucket challenge is now 23-2 but more importantly, their record in region play is 1-0. Juan Diego defeated Morgan and Union defeated Grantsville in other region action last Friday night. Emery will face Morgan in Castle Dale this Friday night.
Carbon received the opening kickoff and started their first drive at their 21-yard line. On the Dinos fourth play of the night, the ball carrier fumbled the ball and Bryce Dugmore recovered for the Spartans. With 8:25 left in the first quarter, Emery scored on their sixth play of the night on a 3-yard run by Austin Allred. Allred went on to score three additional times for the Spartans in the game. Ashton Dieli added the point after. Dieli is the leading kicker in 3A football so far this season and Allred is second in rushing and first in scoring in the 3A ranks. Dugmore is ninth in rushing and fifth in scoring with Dieli ninth in scoring. A balanced attack for the Spartans.
Emery punted on their next two possessions before marching 43 yards on their fourth drive in four plays to score on a 3-yard Dugmore run. Dieli added another extra point. Emery ran just 19 plays in the first half.
On Carbon’s final possession of the first half, the Dinos went from their 32-yard line to the Emery 14-yard line before their drive stalled as the Spartans played good defense. With a first and 10 at the Emery 14 yard line, the Spartans forced the Dinos into a fourth and 26 and the drive ended with an incomplete pass. Emery went to the locker room leading 14-0.
Carbon tried an onside kick to start the second half and the first kick was negated by an off-sides call on Carbon. On the second attempt, the kick actually went backward and the ball was downed at the Carbon 29-yard line. Allred scored on the sixth play of the half and the sixth straight run from 1-yard out. Emery went for two after the touchdown and the pass attempt was no good.
After the Spartans next series ended as they ran out of downs, Carbon was three plays and out on offense and they punted to the Spartans. After the punt return, Emery started the drive at the Spartan 47-yard line, were aided by a Dino 10-yard penalty, and Allred scored on a 30-yard run.
Dieli added another PAT. Emery’s Tristan Tuttle caused a fumble on the Dinos next series with the Spartans recovering at the Dino 22-yard line. Allred scored on the Spartans third play of the drive and the second play of the fourth quarter on a 12-yard run. Dieli again added the extra point.
Carbon scored their lone touchdown of the game on their next drive on a 58-yard run by number 8 for the Dinos. Emery responded by putting together an 80-yard drive that ended on a 37-yard run by Dieli. The drive consisted of just five plays.
For the game, Dugmore ended with 108 yards on 13 carries and scored one touchdown while Dieli ran the ball 12 times and gained 102 yards and scored a touchdown. Allred ran the ball 12 times and picked up 96 yards and scored four times.
On defense, Allred was the leading tackler with 15, with Chase Jewkes coming in second with 10. Tristan Tuttle, Ty Mecham, Kyler Stilson and Dugmore were credited with six each. Dieli had five tackles and Kolton Butler and Logan Cox had four each.
Emery is now 3-2 for the season and each week is playing better. The Spartans are looking to continue their winning ways this week as they host Morgan Friday night at 7 p.m. in another region contest.
