The Huntsman Senior Games will be held in St. George, Oct. 12-14. The Coal Miners Daughters, a softball team comprised of ladies over 55 will attend the event. All of the women on the team are truly coal miners daughters. Their fathers were coal miners or associated with the coal mine industry. The Coal Miners Daughters are proud of their coal miner heritage and want to honor the men and women of the coal industry.
Caleen Wilcox started the team. She was umpiring in St. George when she met Ike Purcell from Fresno, Calif. Purcell told her he would sponsor a team for her if she could put one together. Wilcox returned home and formed the team. Wilcox said there are five cousins on the team, who have played together since they were young. A majority of players played with their mothers when they were in their twenties and thirties.
Wilcox concluded with saying we are privileged and excited we can still play. She thanked everyone for their support and the younger girls who came out to help them practice.
