Castle Dale, Cleveland, and Huntington elementaries participated in International Walk to School Day. The Castle Dale Elementary students started their walk at the Castle Dale City Hall. Students gathered from surrounding areas and the bus dropped students at this beginning point.
There were several parents and teachers on hand to walk with the students. Upon their arrival at school they were all given an I walked to school sticker. The lunch ladies prepared breakfast for all the walkers.
They also signed a huge poster which will be on display at the school.
According to the walking website: International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration, with record breaking participation each October. Today, thousands of schools across America from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico participate every October. Walk to School Day is an energizing event, reminding parents and children alike of the simple joy of walking to school. Walk to School Day becomes a catalyst for on-going efforts to increase walking and bicycling all of the time.
Daily walking opens everyone’s eyes to the need for sidewalks and trails, safe street crossings, more cautious drivers, safer walkers and bicyclists, and even state legislation to fund improvements. Walk to School efforts are about changing community culture. In the process, they build an environment that’s more inviting for walkers of all ages.
Keep your eyes open for youngsters on their way to and from school as they walk to become more healthy and productive during their time at school.
