Lady Spartans win over North Summit/S. Sevier

Emery High Lady Spartans traveled to North Summit High School and defeated the host team 44-30 as sophomore Lainee Jensen found her outside touch and dropped into the basket four 3-point shots and scored 16 points in the game.
Emery had a good first quarter as they jumped to a 17-6 first period lead and then hung on to maintain their advantage throughout the contest and come home with the win. North Summit won the second quarter 6-5, Emery won the third quarter 11-10 and then Emery took the final quarter 11-8 to secure the win.
Jensen also had 2 rebounds and a steal in the game. Camrey Johnson was the second leading scorer with 11 points and CJ also had 3 rebounds, an assist and a steal. Bayler Griffin scored 4 points but led the team with 6 assists and 7 steals. Jessica Olsen only scored 3 points but the senior pulled down 12 rebounds in the game. Also scoring in the game was Megan Jensen with 5 points, Bailey Huggard with 2 points, Kacelyn Toomer with 2 points and Aniston Curtis with 1 point.
The Emery High Lady Spartans are still trying to find their identity as this new season has begun. They played three games in three nights including two games against two of the best this season in 2-A basketball and ended the week with one win and two losses. Emery lost to last season’s champion and this season’s favorite to win it all again Delta by the score of 48-37 on Tuesday night in Castle Dale and then they ended their week by losing a game at Millard to the Eagles by the score of 49-33. Delta is 5-1 this season with their lone loss coming against Juan Diego and Millard is 6-0 this season.
On Wednesday night, Emery hosted South Sevier and defeated the Lady Rams by the score 36-29. South Sevier is just 2-4 so far this season. So far this season Emery is playing about a 10 man rotation which includes four seniors, four freshmen and two sophomores. Out of the 106 points scored last week, the seniors scored 48 and the freshmen scored 58 of those points.
Emery fell behind Delta 19-9 in the first quarter because they turned the ball over five times and shot 23 percent from the field. In the second quarter Emery narrowed the gap to four points but went zero for five in their final five possessions while Delta added three more points and Delta led 28-21 at the half. Emery could never close the gap it gaining the loss.
Kacelyn Toomer led the way with 16 points and Kinlee Toomer added 5 points. Megan Jensen and Camrey Johnson each scored 4 points while Abbie Huntington, Bayler Griffin and Aniston Curtis each scored 3 points. Lainee Jensen and Jessica Olsen each scored 2 points.
Against South Sevier, Emery went on top 13-8 in the first quarter and led 18-12 at the half as both teams had difficulty scoring in the second period. South Sevier grabbed the lead at 23-20 after the third quarter after the Spartans only scored 2 points in the period. Emery played strong in the final period and won the quarter 16-6 to grab the win.
Jensen was the leading scorer with 8 points and Kinlee and Johnson each had 7 points. Griffin scored 6 points while Olsen scored 4 points and Kacelyn scored 3 points and Curtis one point. Olsen led the way in this game with 9 rebounds while Griffin led the way with 3 assists and 4 steals.
Against Millard, the two teams were tied 14-14 after the first quarter but the Spartans got outscored in each of the other three quarters to lose the game. The second period was 12-6 and the third quarter was 17-9.
Johnson was the leading scorer with 11 points and Jensen scored 7 points.
Kinlee and Aniston each scored 4 points while Kacelyn and Bayler each scored 3 points. Bailey Huggard scored one point. Emery plays a single game this week, a home game against Carbon on Tuesday evening.
