On Dec. 23 at 4:30 p.m. on Interstate 70 Mile Post: 165 a 2002 Chevy Tahoe was eastbound on I-70 just east of the east Green River interchange when the vehicle went off the right side of the roadway.
The driver then steered back onto the roadway and then overcorrected resulting in the vehicle going back off the right side of the roadway and down an embankment. The vehicle rolled several times coming to a stop on the south side of the range fence.
The vehicle was on its left side. The vehicle was occupied by nine individuals and it is believed based on a passenger statement and evidence that seven of the occupants were ejected during the rollover.
Preliminary evidence shows some seatbelt usage, but it appears that there were more occupants in the seats than seatbelts present. Two occupants were killed in the wreck and seven were transported from the scene for medical care in various conditions. One occupant was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo. by helicopter. Five of the occupants went to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction by ground ambulance. One other occupant was flown by helicopter to Castleview Hospital in Price.
Weather does not appear to be a factor and speeds have not been determined. There is no evidence of drug or alcohol impairment. Names will be released when next of kin has been notified. The vehicle was registered out of California.
