Emery boys basketball update as season continues

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

Emery traveled to Roosevelt and lost a heartbreaker 58-57 to the Union Cougars as a last second, off-balance shot by someone who had not scored all year went in the basket. The Beaver High team came to town and the Beavers could not solve Emery’s suffocating zone defense and Emery soundly defeated the visiting team 40-23.
The Beavers, who are picked to win the south region, were perplexed from the beginning by Emery’s defense and you could see it in their faces. Beaver scored four points in the first quarter, three points in the second period and six in the third quarter before closing out the game by scoring 10 points as Emery went to its bench. Koby Butler led Emery’s offensive effort with 15 points. Bowdie Jacobsen scored 8, Zac Jorgensen scored 7, Mitch Richarz scored 6 and Bryce Dugmore scored 4 points.
Against Union, Emery jumped out to a 10-point first quarter lead and maintained about that throughout the game although the Cougars kept cutting the lead down, Emery kept restoring it. Union was only in the game because the Spartans shot poorly as they made only 19 baskets in 53 attempts. Besides shooting just 36 percent, Emery also turned the ball over 22 times. Not a good combination.
Despite the shooting and the turnovers, it still took that last second shot for Emery to lose. “He was off-balance and he through up a line drive, no touch at all, and it went in just after the buzzer sounded and you just shook your head,” said Coach Todd Jeffs.
Jacobsen led the Spartan scorers with 17 points followed by Koby Butler with 15 points and Jorgenson with 11 points. Beau Roundy scored 7 points, Dugmore scored 5 points and Kolton Butler scored 2 points. Other stats in the game were Kolton had 10 rebounds and brother Koby had 9. Dugmore led the team with 3 steals and with 5 assists.
In the last five offensive possessions in the basketball game against Richfield the Emery High boys had two turnovers and went two for six from the free throw line but somehow managed to hold on for the win as the Wildcats missed a free throw with :00.6 left on the clock. Richfield is a good 3-A team and Wildcat/Spartan games are usually barn burners and this one was no different. Emery won 48-47 in Castle Dale. Emery went on the road for two games and Emery returned home with a win each time. First they traveled to Fillmore to face the Millard Eagles and they won the game 56-54 and then they traveled to Delta the next day and returned home
after winning 49-37, a blowout for the week.
Against Richfield senior center Beau Roundy scored six points in the first quarter to put the Spartans up 9-4 at the end of the period but Richfield won quarter two by the score of 14-8 and the Wildcats led at the half by one. Emery reclaimed the lead in the third quarter as they went eight for 10 at the free throw line and led 32-31 going into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Emery turned the ball over on their first possession, as they had in the previous three periods, but then the Spartans scored on eight straight possessions to lead 46-41 before they survived the ending of the game and got the win.
Emery went 21 for 32 at the free throw line with Roundy going 7 for 10 and Kolton Butler going 5 for 10. Richfield went 17 for 19 until they went 1 for 2 in that final trip to the line that kept the game from going into overtime. Roundy led the way with 17 points and Koby Butler scored 8 points with brother Kolton and Bowdie Jacobsen each scoring 7 points. Bryce Dugmore scored 6 points and Zac Jorgensen closed out the scoring with 3 points.
At Millard High the Eagles took a 20-11 first quarter lead and then led at the half 30-28 as Emery won the second period 17-10. Emery then won the third period 15-6 to lead 43-36 going into the final quarter which Millard won 18-13. Roundy led the way with 14 points and 14 rebounds and 3 blocked shots and a steal while Jacobsen, Butler and Butler each had 12 points. Koby Butler also had 16 rebounds and Kolton had 9 rebounds and 3 steals 3 assists. Jacobsen had 5 rebounds and 7 assists. Jorgensen scored 6 points.
At Delta, Emery led 14-5 after the first quarter and then slowly grew that lead over the next three periods to win by 12 points. Koby led the way with 18 points and 6 rebounds and 4 steals while Roundy scored 13 points, had 14 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and 4 steals. Jacobsen scored 8 points, Dugmore scored 6 points and Kolton scored 4 points. Jacobsen also had 8 assists.
