Both Green River High basketball teams have struggled so far this season and with region 19 action getting ready to start in earnest, both the girls and the boys are hoping for positive results. The Lady Pirates started the season with wins over Altamont and Intermountain Christian but then proceeded to lose ten games in a row before defeating Pinnacle last week as region games began. The final score of that game was 38-26.
The Green River boys’ team has just a single win this season, a victory over Altamont, and lost their region opener against Pinnacle by the score of 56-38. Their season record stands at 1-10.
The boys are led this season by Jacob Cox, who is averaging 9.64 points per game and Jovani Flores who is averaging 9.0 points per game. The boys do not have a game this week but will be back in action on January 19th and January 22nd with games against Monticello and Monument Valley. The Lady Pirates won the Pinnacle game because they outscored their opponent 17-6 in the third quarter to break open a tight game. Maribel Escalante led the effort by scoring 11 points, grabbing 6 rebounds and coming up with 6 steals. Presley Lovato scored 10 points, had 5 rebounds and 5 steals and Savannah Williams also scored 10 points and had 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Miranda Johnson led the team with 11 rebounds and she scored 4 points.
Escalante leads the team this season with a 12.07 points per game average and Williams is next with a 9.36 points per game average and a 8.14 rebounds per game average.
The Lady Pirates take on Monticello this Saturday evening in their only action of the week.
