Start your new year by joining the Emery County Business Chamber: Lunch and Learn Jan. 20

By PATSY STODDARD Editor

The Emery County Business Chamber is inviting all Emery County Businesses to get involved in the Emery County Business Community. Chamber President Jared Anderson wants everyone to feel welcome to join and wants everyone to know there are many benefits from joining the chamber. One benefit is attending the Lunch and Learn educational focuses every other month. A new thing at the Lunch and Learn is to let attendees speak on what’s new with their business and any promotions or special events they might be having. This will help you promote your business. Join the chamber in January before the Lunch and Learn on Jan. 20, or at the Lunch and Learn and receive your meal free.
There’s much to be learned at the Lunch and Learns. One of the informative Lunch and Learns from last year was about Conductive Composites a new business in Emery County.
Nate Hansen from Conductive Composites explained what they do at their business. They recently built a new building in Cleveland and relocated from Green River.
He said composite materials are used widely in the sporting goods industry. Graphite fishing rods, golf clubs, in automotives, cars, airplanes. They are used all over. What a composite does is make a composite act like a metal. This reduces the weight and size from what it would be if the product was made with metal. Hansen said he spends his time in Heber City, here in Emery County and the rest of the time traveling promoting their products.
The research lab is in the Heber City facility. They produce the product which goes into bullet proof vests the kevlar tubes. They are coated, metal on fiber.
“We’ve been in Emery County for five years. It’s a family owned company. Thirty years ago my dad quit his day job and went into this full time. We spent a few years in Europe. We were approached by the Air Force to produce metal coated fiber. We have increased capacity and product lines. The research lab in Heber City is like Mad Science. We needed to produce larger quantities and we needed more space. We moved into the airport hangar at the Green River airport and then found the land here to build. We like the security and the isolation of the area.”
Hansen showed a wire which they produce that attaches to a defibrillator. They sell these to medical device companies. They need a new one every six months. A lot of their product goes to this purpose.
He showed another coated cable that’s used so electromagnetic interference doesn’t occur. He reminded everyone in the old days TVs always had interference. If you turned on the vacuum while the TV was on, the TV went crazy. These coated wires keep interference from happening. The product also weighs 30 percent less.
Their other product works to take weight out of airplanes. They have several well guarded trade secrets they have developed.
They have a great safety record with their products. Any chemicals they use if released would be dissipated before they reached the parking lot. The operations are safe. Cars these days contain many computers. There are a lot of motors and high voltage. Interference problems can occur and could be deadly, if cars suddenly turned off, or if the air bags went off without warning. With the products Conductive Composites manufactures, it keeps cars safe. It blocks dangerous air waves. Products are being developed that may not be marketed for several years. Testing on these products is expensive.
“We’ve had some great support in our relocation to Emery County. Commissioner Jeff Horrocks was a great help,” said Hansen.
“It’s a dynamic company and we kind of learn as we go. We make observations about where the tech business is going. It’s a tech driven business. We look ahead to where sales will be in 10 years and make data based decisions. We keep a close eye on our own business and where we’ve been and where we’re going. We keep a lot of data on ourselves. If you don’t measure everything, you can’t tell if it’s improving. There is also value in networking. There might be someone you met 10 years ago that will help you out one day. You might have what they need or they might have what you need. Networking is important. We go to a lot of trade shows and investment events. Our decisions are marathon decisions, not split second decisions. Things can change. You have to keep an eye on the marathon to just survive the current mile. We are glad to be here in your county. We made a marathon decision. We are planning our next building. We will add more workers over time,” said Hansen.
Conductive Composites has used EAO Services out of Lawrence. They are machinists and fabricators in the county.
