Green River Basketball Homecoming Games v. Monument Valley

It was homecoming time in Green River last week and the two Green River High teams hosted Monument Valley on Friday night. The Lady Pirates won and the Pirate boys lost in the closing minutes of the game as Monument Valley used a big fourth quarter to secure the region victory. The scores were 43-41 for Monument Valley in the boys’ game and 51-44 for the Lady Pirates.
The Pirates are 0-3 in region 19 with the loss behind Monticello at 4-0, Pinnacle Academy at 3-1 and Monument Valley at 1-2. The boys will play at Whitehorse High this Friday night looking to pick-up their first region win.
The Lady Pirates are 2-1 in region 19 play behind Monticello at 4-0. Whitehorse in 1-2 along with Monument Valley and Pinnacle is 0-4. The girls host Pinnacle on Wednesday night and will travel to Whitehorse on Friday night.
The Lady Pirates trailed 16-5 after the first quarter to Monument Valley and then barely trailed at the half 30-28, The Lady Pirates lost the third quarter 8-7 to trail going into the fourth 38-35 but won quarter four 16-6 to grab the win.
Scoring for the Lady Pirates were Maribel Escalante with 18 points as she made six 3-pointers, Presley Lovato with 12 points, Savannah Williams with 9 points and Cassidy Bastian, Justice Hatfield and Miranda Johnson with 4 points each.
Escalante also had 4 rebounds and 4 steals while Lovato added 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 10 steals. Williams had 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals and Johnson had 9 rebounds.
The Green River boys led 12-8 after the first quarter and 24-17 at the half. They extended the lead in the third quarter to 34-25 before getting outscored 18-7 in the final period to lose the game by two.
Scoring for the Pirate team were Jacob Cox and Trey Vetere with 12 points each, Jovani Flores with 8 points, Jonathan Salinas with 4 points, Nate Cox with 3 points and Nickolas Shaffer with 2 points.
