The Emery High Lady Spartans will reach the halfway point of their region season with Tuesday’s game against Manti in Castle Dale and with a win will have finished that half with a perfect 5-0 record. Emery at 4-0 will host Manti Tuesday night to close out the first half of the season for both teams but Manti would like the win probably more than the Spartans though as they would like to stay close in the region race. Manti has a 3-1 record with just a loss to North Sevier blemishing their record.
North Sevier also possesses a 3-1 region record with just a lone loss at the hands of the Lady Spartans just a week and a half ago and they would love revenge when Emery travels there on Thursday night. Basically it boils down to this, the Lady Spartans play the two teams right behind them in region action and both want a win so if Emery can win two they will put some distance between themselves and the number two team as the season concludes on Feb. 11, right around the corner.
Last week the Lady Spartans had two relatively easy wins as they defeated San Juan 60-22 and Gunnison Valley 70-34. Both games were close after the first quarter but them separation occurred both nights in the second quarter and the Lady Spartans did not let up throughout the rest of the game.
Emery led Gunnison on Tuesday night in Gunnison 15-12 after the first quarter but then won the second period 16-6 to lead 31-18. They won the third quarter 24-8 and led 55-26 and then took the final period 15-8 to dominate the game. Lainee Jensen, Jessica Olsen and Megan Jensen each scored 12 points in the game to pace the Emery team.
Emery hosted San Juan on Thursday night and led 13-9 after the first quarter as Bayler Griffin led the way with five points. Emery then won the second quarter 15-5 with Morgan Hursdman leading the way with 5 points. Emery won quarter three 18-0 and it was Lainee’s turn to score 5 points and lead the way. The Spartan team closed out the game by taking quarter four 14-8 and Taijah Price scored 6 points to lead the team.
Against San Juan Camrey Johnson, Griffin and Olsen each scored 8 points to lead the way for Emery. Hurdsman scored 7 points and Price and Megan Jensen each scored 6 points. Lainee scored 5 points with Kinlee Toomer scoring 4 points, Kacelyn Toomer scoring 3 points, Ambree Bennett and Aniston Curtis each scoring 2 points and Bailey Huggard scoring 1 point.
Against Gunnison, Price scored 9 points and Johnson and Huggard each scored 8 points to follow closely behind the leading scoring threesome. Curtis had 4 points and Kinlee scored 2 points. Lainee, besides scoring 12 points, also lead the team with 5 assists and 5 steals and also pulled down 5 rebounds. Curtis led the way with 6 rebounds. Against the Broncos, Megan had 6 rebounds and Aniston had 5 rebounds and Johnson had 4 steals and Lainee had 4 assists.
