The Emery County School District held the district wide spelling bee on Feb. 3. The winners from the individual elementary schools and junior highs were in attendance. The spelling bee is for fourth-eighth graders.
The winner, the second and third place finishers will attend the regional bee on March 8 at Green River High School. The winner from that spelling bee will be eligible to attend the National Spelling Bee in Washington DC the end of May.
Ralph Worthen the supervisor of elementary education explained the rules. Diane Carter pronounced the words for the event. Kerri Allred was a judge.
District winners included: Jace Jorgensen from San Rafael Junior High was the first place finisher; Jayce Rudd from Canyon View Junior High was the second place finisher and Joey Leonard from Castle Dale Elementary was the third place finisher.
Jace Jorgensen spelled tranquil, jurisdiction, balcony, foist, broadleaf, pretzel, academy, chutney, gunny sack, futon, gorgeous and his winning word was nightingale.
Jayce Rudd spelled Gemini, Phoenix, gospel, burrito, unity, crimson, scrabble, Soviet, adobe, cameo, renovate, sonata, macaroni, miso and Dracula.
Joey Leonard spelled diametrically, sand script, cushy, harpoon, brackish and bugle.
Other words spellers were asked to spell included: tarmac, schnitzel, tenement, philharmonic, methodology, query, esoteric, resilient, sustainable, synthetic, infrastructure, smorgasbord, languish, augment, reciprocate, frolic and impervious.
