The Emery High Lady Spartans did what they had to do last week in winning two region ball games but then luck entered into the mix and the luck was with North Sevier and not Emery. After the two teams tied for the region championship with 9-1 records, a coin flip was held and Emery lost the flip and received the number two seed out of region 15 for the upcoming 2-A state basketball tournament that starts this Friday morning at Orem High School. North Sevier took the number one seed. Emery will play at 8:30 a.m., the first game of the day, and will face the number three seed out of region 16, Maeser Prep.
Delta High finished the season will a 20-1 record and the number one ranking by the Salt Lake newspapers. Millard was second with a 17-3 record and North Sevier was third, also with a 17-3 season record. The winners of the eight games Friday will advance to the Sevier Valley Center the next Thursday to continue state play and the losers will stay home as they will be done for the year.
Last week Emery went on the road twice, first to Manti and then to San Juan, and won their final two games of the season. First they defeated Manti on Tuesday night 72-58 and then they defeated the Lady Broncos 65-50. In both games they led the entire way and gradually built up their lead. For just a minute at Blanding, as the second half started, Emery’s lead vanished as the San Juan team came out after the half and hit six straight shots with the first five being three-pointers.
Scoring for Emery against Manti was Megan Jensen with 16 points and CJ Johnson with 14 points to lead the way. Bayler Griffin scored 11 points, Kinlee Toomer scored 9 points, Kacelyn Toomer and Bailey Huggard each scored 5 points and Lainee Jensen, Jessica Olsen and Abbie Huntington each scored 4 points.
At Blanding, Kacelyn Toomer led the way with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Sixteen of those points came in the fourth quarter. CJ had 9 points and 4 steals, Olsen had 8 points, Erin Hurst had 6 points as did Kinlee, Aniston Curtis had 4 points and Huntington, Griffin and Lainee each had 3 points. Huggard scored 1 point. Griffin had 5 assists.
