With two bigs wins last week over Manti and then San Juan, the Emery High boy’s basketball team finished the region season with a 9-1 record and as region 15 champions. The Spartans now own a 19-2 season record and will go into the 2-A state playoffs as the number one seeded team out of region 15 and will face the region 16 fourth place team, Providence Hall at Orem High School next Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. There will be eight games Saturday at Orem High with the winners moving on to Richfield the next week and the losers going home.
Emery faced the only team to defeat them this region season on Wednesday and after a close game through three quarters, the Spartans finally put breathing room between them and the Templars as they won the game 61-45.
The score was 16-12 for Emery after the first quarter, 33-28 for Emery at the half and 44-38 for Emery after three periods. The Spartans won the fourth quarter 17-7 to win going away.
Koby Butler led the team with 22 points and Bowdie Jacobsen added 21 points. Only four Spartans scored in this game with Bryce Dugmore scoring 11 points and Kolton Butler adding 7 points.
On Friday night, Emery and San Juan were close after the first quarter at 15-12 for Emery. Emery won quarter two 18-8 as Koby led the team with eight points and Easton Gordon scored 6. The score was tied at 18-18 and then the Spartans scored the next 12 points.
The Spartans won quarter three 17-8 with Zach Jorgensen scoring 9 points and then finished off the Broncos by winning quarter four 20-12 to win the game 70-40. The short line-up that finished the game of Jacobsen, Dugmore, Gordon and Jorgensen and Kolton with four of those players at six foot tall or less played really effective in keeping the Broncos off balance. Dugmore scored 9 points in the period and made five of seven free throws in the period.
Four Spartans scored in double figures in the game with Koby Butler scoring 15 points to lead the way. Jorgensen scored 14 points and Gordon and Dugmore each scored 11 points. Jacobsen scored 8 and Kolton Butler scored 7. The finals two players to score were Mitch Richarz and Kyler Wakefield with 2 points each.
Providence Hall finished the season with a 10-11 record and most of their wins were against 1-A competition.
