The Emery High baseball team kicked off their 2016 season last week with four games. Emery lost to Uintah High 13-0 and then the Spartans made their annual trip to Montrose, Colo. to play in a two-day tournament and Emery returned home winning one of three games. After three really good seasons, the Spartans this season are both young and inexperienced when it comes to varsity action. Coach Gordon expects his team to constantly improve as the season progresses.
In Montrose, Emery defeated Eagle Valley 11-7 with Tel Gardner being the winning pitcher.
Emery scored once in the second inning and three times in both the fourth and fifth innings and then four times in the top of the seventh inning. Eagle scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning and four times in the final inning.
Bryce Dugmore and Easton Gordon each hit a triple in the game and Jordan Baletka, Gardner and Tristan Deabenderfer each had a double.
Emery then went on to lose to Montrose 10-8 and then closed out the Colorado trip by losing to Delta, Colo. 15-5. Against Uintah, Emery managed just four base hits and committed three errors in six innings of play.
Uintah scored three times in the first inning, eight times in the fifth inning and twice in the sixth inning as they had 14 base hits in the game. Kyler Stilson was the losing pitcher for the Spartans.
