The Emery High Lady Spartan softball team played well enough offensively last week to win a couple of region softball games but defensively they committed too many errors and the result was two losses instead of two wins. Emery traveled to San Juan on Tuesday and lost 15-14 and then on Friday, the Broncos returned the trip to Emery and the San Juan team won again, this time by the score of 12-6.
In Blanding, the Spartans outhit the home team 17 to 14 as the game went to extra innings but the errors allowed too many Broncos to cross the plate. Emery committed 10 errors in the game.
Emery scored three runs in the top of the first inning but San Juan countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Both teams scored twice in the second inning and Emery won the third inning 1-0 to tie the score. Both teams scored once in the fourth inning and then San Juan scored twice in the fifth inning. Emery won the the sixth inning 3-2 and the seventh inning 2-1 to send the game to overtime. The Broncos won that final inning 3-2 to secure the win.
Bailey Huggard hit two home runs in the game and Kelsey Reeve and Jessica Mason each hit one.
Mason also had a double and two singles and finished the day going four of five at the plate. Jacie Huntington and Reeve also had doubles in the game. Carlie Robinson had two singles and Huntington, Reeve, Ashlun Clark, Addy Healy, Jayla Weston and Morgann Donaldson each hit one.
At home Mason continued her hot hitting as she hit a triple and had three singles to finish the two games going eight for nine. Shaylee Jewkes and Healy had doubles and Ambree Bennett, Reeve, Huggard, Healy, Weston and Robinson each had singles. Huntington had three singles.
Emery had 15 base hits in the second contest but committed 13 errors and those errors kept the Spartans out of the win column. Huggard and Clark pitched in both games with Bailey getting the start and Clark finishing the game.
Grand High, San Juan and Gunnison are leading the region while Piute, Emery and North Sevier are winless so far. Grand is ranked fourth in 2-A and Gunnison is ranked fifth.
Emery will play Gunnison on Tuesday and Duchesne on Wednesday.
