Applications Now Accepted for State Superintendent Position

By By

The Utah State Board of Education today began accepting applications for the position of State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The position will remain open for 30 days, closing at 5 p.m. May 25, 2016.
“We invite qualified candidates who feel they can bring unique strengths to the table and positively benefit the students of Utah to consider applying for this position,” said Selection Committee Chair Mark Huntsman. “We are excited to open the job and hope to see a large pool of applicants.”
In March, the State Board formed a Superintendent Selection Committee, following the resignation of Brad C. Smith. The committee is comprised of nine members of the State Board and is following their own bylaws, which outline the process by which a superintendent shall be appointed.
The job announcement is posted on the State Board website and will be sent to approximately two dozen stakeholder groups both in state and nationally. It was written using feedback gathered in a public online survey that asked what qualities and characteristics people believe are the most important in a state superintendent.
Nearly 1,700 people responded to the survey.
“As we move forward into this part of the process, we are grateful to those in the public who took the time to take our online survey and express their thoughts. We understand this is of particular interest to many in Utah and will strive to live up to their expectations,” Huntsman said.
Following the 30-day application window, the Selection Committee anticipates narrowing the field and then spending about two weeks conducting semi-finalist interviews. The full Board will conduct final interviews and hopes to make an appointment by the end of June 2016.
