Huntington City discusses the city budget

By GARY ARRINGTON Staff Writer

The budget for fiscal year 2017 was discussed at the May meeting of the Huntington City Council as the Council prepares to approve a budget next month. The total budget for next year will be just over $1,737,547.00. The General budget, this is the amount the city runs on, will be $725,057. The complete proposed budget is posted at city hall.
The Council approved the use of the city park for a weekly farmers market starting in late July. High Desert Growers currently produce a farmers market in Price and sellers will bring their products to Huntington also. It is undecided as to the time and day of the week.
The Council approved a request to go to CIB for the purpose of building a new restroom at the city park and for constructing a west wall and a drain system on the west at the city cemetery. Water coming off the hill needs to be moved away from graves according to Councilman Joe Ward. The projected total cost of the two projects is $468,000 with $358,000 going to the city park. The city will request a $75,000 loan and a $243,000 grant.
Emery County has approached the city about converting the grass behind the old fire station into parking for the senior citizens center which is next door. When the senior citizens building is rented out parking often becomes an issue. Emery County would foot the bill for any changes agreed to.
Ordinance 2-2016 was approved. This ordinance details items located at the cemetery, specifically stating that floral pieces, displays and other such items can only be left at gravesites three days before and up to seven days after a holiday, birthday of deceased, burial day, etc. The City also raised the price for opening and closing a grave by $50.
Mayor Hilary Gordon reported the new concession stand at the rodeo grounds has issues with doors and water. It was the feeling of the council that the construction and/or design was flawed. The Mayor also reported preparation for Heritage Days is moving along nicely and residents should expect another good celebration.
