On July 1, at approximately 8:47 pm, a Jeep Wrangler was eastbound on SR-6 near mile marker 298, which is about 2 miles west of the I-70 junction and 4 miles west of Green River.
A Ford F-150 pulling a boat trailer was westbound in the same area, a short distance to the east of the Wrangler. A Honda Accord was traveling eastbound, a short distance behind the Wrangler. A Ford Focus was directly behind the Accord, also eastbound.
Patrick Giles (43, West Jordan) was driving the Wrangler and Michael Reagan (39, South Jordan) was the passenger. Ryan Benson (45, Centerville) was driving the F-150. Wendy Benson (43, Centerville), Parker Benson (16, Centerville), and Kate Benson (12, Centerville) were all passengers in the F-150. Cali Trunnell (23, Paradise) was driving the Accord and Olivia Trunnell (14, Paradise) was the passenger. Cameron Romig (20, Midvale) was driving the Focus and Erin Lofgren (20, Midvale) was the passenger.
For an undetermined reason, the Wrangler’s left rear rim and tire came off the axle and rolled into the westbound travel lanes. The F-150’s driver swerved to avoid the tire and crossed the center line, impacting the Accord in the driver’s door. This impact pushed the Accord off the highway onto the eastbound shoulder. All indications are that Cali Trunnell was killed instantly in this collision. As the Focus swerved to avoid the collision, it side-swiped the F-150.
Olivia Trunnell suffered a broken nose and bruising from the seat belt. She was transported by medical helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. There were no other injuries in the crash.
