Days of 47 youth parade

By By

The 2016 Days of ’47 Youth Parade will take place on Saturday, July 23rd, at 10 a.m. on the usual route in downtown Salt Lake City (westbound on 500 South, from 500 East to Washington Square at the Salt Lake City and County Building). It’s always a favorite prelude to the main Parade (Monday, July 25th, 9 a.m.). However, this year there will be something different about it.
Parade organizers have gathered the names of more than eight hundred children who lost their lives somewhere on the original Mormon Pioneer trail in the mid-1800s. Some perished at Winter Quarters in Nebraska — others on the high plains of Wyoming or somewhere else along the way. The journey was more than nine hundred miles.
Each of those names will be assigned to one of the children participating in this year’s Youth Parade so each child will be walking in memory and honor of one who never made it to the Salt Lake Valley. Upon arrival at the Parade finish, each child will post the name they walked for on a special banner where photos can be taken and memories preserved.
The Days of ’47 invites you to come to Family Festival after the Youth Parade to review the list of children’s names. If you are aware of a child not listed, please let us know at the Festival.
The Days of ’47, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. General contributions are tax deductible and always welcome. See our website at www.daysof47.com.
