The 2016 Dinosaur Tire/Les Schwab Cowboys Memorial Rodeo was held at the Castle Dale City rodeo grounds July 29-30. The contestant roster was larger than last year.
The CMR is the 50 yard line in a string of over 40 rodeos sanctioned by the Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Association, one of the largest Semi-Pro Rodeos in the Western United States and their rodeos cover a span from Rigby, Idaho to Pahrump, Nevada, and consists of approximately 500 members who are competing for their share of over $400,000 in prize money which will be awarded by the RMPRA and its sanctioned rodeos by the end of the season on Oct. 1.
The top 12 in the standings in each event as determined by money won will be invited to the finals of the RMPRA and compete for the year end championship, custom saddles, buckles and bragging rights. The CMR is the beginning of “make-it or break-it” time for a good portion of the cowboys and cowgirls competing.
The veteran bull rider Shad Heiner of Morgan who now holds the number one spot in the standings at the midway point of the season, but only by a little over $200. The young talent giving him a run for his money is Cleveland’s Austin Allred, who wears the State High school Championship Buckle and who was the number one bull rider in the standings of the RMPRA until two weeks ago. The dark horses of the race are Shawn Proctor and Sonny Murphy, both of which have competed on rodeos largest stage, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Murphy is the defending CMR Champion. Rodeo results in next week’s Emery County Progress.
