Last Friday night the Emery High Spartans hosted the Union Cougars in their homecoming game and the Spartans defeated the Cougars 29-7 in this hard-fought contest. Emery took their region record to 2-1 with the win. Union received the opening kickoff of the game and the Cougars punted after two incomplete passes and a tackle for a loss by Kolton Butler. Emery started their first series of the game at their 42-yard line. Emery put together a 12-play drive with Logan Cox scoring on a run from the 3-yard line. After an Ethan Winter extra-point kick, Emery led 7-0 with 4:47 left in the first quarter.
After both teams were unsuccessful in doing much on offense over the next several possessions, Union started their fourth drive of the game at their 46-yard line and scored after a nine-play drive. With the extra point the two teams were tied at 7-7. Emery punted after three plays and on the Cougars first offensive play, Easton Gordon intercepted a pass and the Spartans ran out the clock to halftime with the score tied at 7-7.
The second half started well for Emery. On the Union kickoff, Easton Gordon caught the kickoff at the 10-yard line and returned it to his right where he handed off to Logan Cox at the 17-yard line on a reverse and Cox finished the play by taking the ball 83 yards and scoring a touchdown. Another Ethan Winter PAT and Emery led 14-7.
Emery finished out the 3rd quarter by scoring again with 0.01 seconds showing on the clock. Emery started the drive at their 41-yard line and scored eight plays later on a 3-yard run by Tel Gardner. The big play of the drive was a pass play from Zach Jorgensen to Gordon that covered 34 yards.
Emery scored one more time in the game when Jorgensen hit Kolton Butler on a pass play that covered 26 yards. Emery then went for two points on the PAT and holder Derek Justice hit receiver Kobe Faimalo with a pass and the Spartans now led 29-7.
Jorgensen completed 7 of 13 passes for 109 yards and the one touchdown. Emery gained 130 yards on the ground with Cox leading the way with 71 yards. Faimalo gained 34 yards on 5 carries and Gardner gained 18 yards also on 5 carries.
In a balanced defensive attack, linebacker Chase Jewkes led the way with 8 tackles followed by lineman Drake Hoffman with 5 tackles. Ty Mecham and Gordon each had 4 tackles followed by Dalton McKee, Logan Labrum, Faimalo, Jared Snow, Gardner and Koby Butler with 3 tackles each.
Emery will host Grantsville this Friday night in their final regular season home game of the 2016 season. The team will honor the seniors.
