The Emery County Domestic Violence coalition held a domestic violence awareness event at the Emery High football game. They sold purple bracelets and walked a mile around the track to bring awareness to domestic violence. They had a booth which distributed domestic violence awareness information.
One in three Utah women will experience domestic abuse at some time in her life according to the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition. Census data reports claim there are 1.5 million women in Utah. Of those, about 500,000 will be a victim of abuse. It seems virtually impossible for anyone of us not to know a woman in Utah who is currently experiencing or has previously experienced domestic abuse based on these numbers.
Other statistics from the State Coalition are equally sobering. Three women die every day in the United States as a result of domestic violence.
There were 635 more deaths related to domestic violence than related to war since 9/11. In 2015, there were 22 domestic violence deaths in Utah.
The State Coalition has a billboard campaign across Utah to raise awareness of domestic violence in our State. The billboard features three Utah women who represent the prevalence of domestic abuse in our families and it can be seen locally in Price, Green River, Vernal, and Richfield.
Domestic violence is present in many forms, financially, emotionally, verbally, sexually, and physically. It knows no bounds and affects all socio-economic groups, all genders, all races, all religious groups and all educational backgrounds. Children are profoundly impacted by witnessing domestic violence in their homes and often perpetuate the cycle of abuse.
Businesses lose millions of dollars due to workers lost wages, sick leave, absenteeism, and nonproductivity.
Workplaces become dangerous as violence follows from home.
You can call 911 if you know someone who is in an emergency situation because of domestic abuse. Other help is available by calling 381-4743.
Remember the most important thing you can do is listen to a victim and believe their story. Let them know that no one deserves to be abused and that they are not alone.
The billboards across the State can remind you that you have the ability to make a difference in combating domestic violence.
