After splitting a pair of region games last week to close out the 2016 regular season, the Emery High Lady Spartan volleyball team is ready to travel this Friday to Utah Valley University in Orem to compete in the Utah State 2-A volleyball tournament. Emery’s first game will be at 4 p.m. against Layton Christian.
Layton Christian is the second place seed out of region 14 while the Spartans are the third place seed out of region 15. The Spartans second game will be at 7 p.m. Friday night, court 2 if they win and court 1 if they lose.
San Juan won region 15 with a perfect 10-0 record after defeating the Spartans in their final match of the season last Wednesday night. Emery won game 1, 25-23 but then lost the next three to the Broncos. North Sevier finished second in the region and Gunnison finished fourth with Grand and Manti not advancing to the state tournament.
On Tuesday night at the Spartan Center, Emery hosted Grand and defeated the Red Devils in four games by the scores of 26-24, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-20. The Emery team looked sharp throughout the night with the possible exception of the third set that they lost. In this game they fell behind from the onset and never quite recovered as they committed some unforced errors. They jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the final game and then coasted to the win. Emery was leading 10-8 and with Shyler Griffin serving, the Spartans scored the next six points.
Lady Spartans that have seen most of the varsity action this season include seniors Michaela Wolford and Kabri Butler, juniors Morgann Donaldson, Rylee Jones and Sam Morgan and sophomores Griffin, Reagan Rasmussen, Bailey Huggard and Megan Jensen.
