"Students receive their awards."

By PHIL FAUVER staff writer

Orangeville City Mayor Roger Swenson on November 14, 2016 presented the Orangeville City Mayor Award to eleven Cottonwood Elementary students. This award was given in recognition of these eleven being outstanding students in several academic areas and were assets to the community.
Mayor Swenson said the Cottonwood Elementary teachers and staff had nominated the following eleven students for the Mayor’s Award: Megan Nelson, Lizzy Carroll, Jazmin Hatch, Case Turner, Julieanna Nehls, Parker Madsen, Allee Sitterud, Luke Seely, Oaklee Hopes, Revis Anderson and Cooper Springer.
Special recognition by Mayor Swenson was given to student Megan Nelson who had done an unspecified act of kindness for someone else. Because of Megan’s action, Megan and her class will receive a sum of money at the Orangeville City Council meeting on Dec. 8 to be used for things the class needs.
Mayor Swenson requested Janet Tuttle who is both an Orangeville City Council Member and a Cottonwood Elementary Teacher to assist him in making the award presentations.
Each of the eleven students were given the recognition award certificate to take home and a balloon with a bag of candy attached from Food Ranch.
Mayor Swenson said he hoped all of the Cottonwood Elementary students would continue to be the very best they could be at school and in the community. That they could help one another, help their neighbors and friends help Orangeville become an even better place. He emphasized “get to know your neighbors and be kind to them.”
Mayor Swenson said his six children all went to Cottonwood Elementary School. His oldest son became interested in earth science in the sixth grade and now he works in Senator Mike Lee’s office, in Washington DC, on Natural Resource issues.
Mayor Swenson’s main message to the student body was be the very best that you can be, reach across the street, help someone else and be kind to each other.
