Huntington City Council plans cemetery project

By GARY ARRINGTON Staff Writer

The Huntington City Council held their final city council meeting of 2016 on December 21. The City approved the purchasing of property from SITLA that the Huntington City irrigation pond sits on. The price of $35,000 for the 40 acres was the appraised value of the ground. This ground sits adjacent to other ground that the City owns. It was discussed that a local farmer is currently farming on some of the ground.
In other business, the Council approved a bid from Staker Parson’s Nielson Construction for work on the cemetery project dealing with securing the property to the west of the cemetery. The engineer’s estimate was for $59,595.50 and the winning bid was for $59,170.65.
Although several other contractors showed up for the initial showing there were only two actual bids. Nelco Construction also submitted a bid for $77,179.75. The project will secure the hill which during rain and significant flood events causes damage to the cemetery. This project will help with runoff.
The Council also discussed adding lighting at the Veteran’s Memorial at the cemetery. Mayor Hilary Gordon thanked everyone that assisted with the Community Christmas party, a gathering that everyone thought went really well. Mayor Gordon also reported on a contribution from Pacificorp which will go toward the restroom project in the City Park.
Councilman Lamar Guymon thanked the City workers for all their efforts in making Huntington a place to live. He reported that he sees them everywhere and that they are always being productive. Councilman Mark Justice reported the City’s equipment is ready to go whenever the snow decides to fall. (It fell two days later.)
