The Emery High boys’ basketball team concluded the 2016 part of their season with a game against Union High in Roosevelt just before Christmas. Emery prevailed in that game 74-55 and went to the break with a 9-0 season record.
Emery will start up the 2017 part of the 2016-17 basketball season this Wednesday in a game at Beaver, which will be the first of three games this week. Emery follows that up with a game on Friday night at home against Manti and then will conclude the week on Saturday night with a game at Carbon High.
In the game at Union, Emery grabbed the lead in the first quarter 17-10 and then extended that seven point lead by 12 points in the second quarter to lead 40-21 at the half. The crescendo continued in the third quarter as Emery won the period by eight to lead 60-33 after three. Union won the final period 22-14 to bring the final score just a little closer.
Senior Koby Butler was man among boys in the game as he scored 26 points in the game and made 52 percent of his shots. Koby also pulled down 19 rebounds with 9 of those being on the offensive side of the court. The only negative was the fact that he picked up four fouls and sat a little.
Kolton Butler, a brother of Koby for those who don’t know, also had a pretty good game as he scored 9 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and dished out 11 assists. Kolton also had 2 steals.
Also scoring in the game were Zach Jorgensen with 11 points, Easton Gordon with 9 points, Keaton McDermott with 6 points, Bowdie Jacobsen and Kyson Stilson with 5 points each and Brax Jensen with 3 points. Gordon led the team with 5 steals and Jacobsen also had 7 assists.
For the season, four Spartans are averaging in double figures for scoring with Koby leading the way with a 19.7 average. Jacobsen is averaging 12.2 points followed by Jorgensen at 11.0 points per game and Kolton averaging 10.2 points per game. Emery is averaging 72.7 points per game as a team.
The two Green River High basketball teams have gone into the Holiday break hoping that the New Year will bring them better results than so far in this season. The boys’ team has a record of 1-11 with a loss at the hands of the Grand Red Devils last week. The girls go to the break with a record of 2-7 after they defeated Wendover in their final game of 2016.
The final score of that game was 53-44.
The Lady Pirates also defeated Valley earlier in the season by the score of 42-28. Maribel Escalante is the leading scorer for the Lady Pirates so far this season with a 15.56 scoring average over nine games.
Escalante is also averaging 5.56 rebounds per game, 1.89 assists per game and 2.78 steals per game. Savannah Williams is second in scoring with an 8.11 average and Williams is the leading rebounder with 7.22 rebounds per game and she is also leads the team in assists with 2.33 per game.
For the boys’ team, the Pirates only win came over Escalante earlier this year by the score of 40-36. Jacob Cox is the leading scorer with an 11.25 average and he leads the team with twenty-six 3-pointers made so far this year. Trey Vetere is the second leading scorer with a 7.33 average.
