A wish has been granted. Kina Jewkes and family will be spending one week at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. The great proclamation was given on Jan. 14 at the Tuscan in Price. Judi Bishop and Teri Drashner were the wish granters and ambassadors for the Make a Wish Utah Foundation. Bishop would like to thank Tony Basso for donating the Tuscan for the announcement, to Pru Sherman for the decorations for the party and to Little Caesars pizza for donating the lunch.
Kina and her family left on Jan. 18 for Florida.
Kina’s brother Chase said Kina loves everything to do with Disney. His mom’s side of the family is crazy about all Disney stuff. His dad’s side of the family is crazy about work. Kina goes to school at Cottonwood Elementary.
Kina is the 10 year old daughter of Greg and Jennifer Jewkes of Orangeville. Greg said, “We’ve been to Primary Children’s twice for cadaver livers, but they weren’t a match. Currently, my wife’s niece is being tested and we’re waiting to hear back from the surgeon to see if she’s a match. It all started when Kina was itchy and scratching all the time. We thought maybe it was something to do with her skin. We took her to the Emery Medical Center and Lowell Morris said they would run a series of tests to see if they could determine what was going on. It turns out she has a rare liver disease. It’s so rare it hasn’t been diagnosed yet.
“Kina is still healthy, she had a basketball game this morning. She does get tired easily. My friend Shaun Bell gave a third of his liver to his niece. So, I’ve talked to him quite a bit about this. It’s been nice to talk to someone that’s been through it. The liver can regenerate itself, so live donors if they are a match are a possibility for Kina. She’s on the liver transplant list,” said Greg.
Kina said she’s so excited to go on her trip to Disney World. It was a total surprise she said. The family worked hard to keep the trip a secret and Kina was all smiles this day as she realized one of her dreams was coming true.
