Lady Spartans clinch top region spot

With a 60-50 victory at North Sevier High School last Thursday night, the Emery High Lady Spartans won the region 15 basketball title and will now close out the season with two games this week against San Juan and Grand.
Emery leads region 15 with an 8-0 record with North Sevier in second place with a 6-2 record followed by San Juan at 5-3, Grand at 3-6, Manti at 2-5 and Gunnison Valley at 0-8.
Emery led 15-13 after the first quarter against the Wolves but trailed 29-25 at the half after having been outscored in the second quarter 16-10. Emery won the third period 21-13 to reclaim the lead at 46-42 and then solidified the win with a good fourth quarter. Emery won the final quarter 14-8 to secure the win against the 2-A preseason favorite.
Emery was led in scoring by Kinlee Toomer with 19 points and fellow sophomore Megan Jensen scored 17 points. Twin sister Kacelyn Toomer scored 11 points to also finish in double figures. Junior Lainee Jensen scored 6 points as did sophomore Bailey Huggard. The final point in the game was scored by freshman Hailey Jo Allred. Megan led the team with 11 rebounds and 5 assists. The Toomers each had three steals to lead the team in that category.
Emery also defeated Gunnison Valley last week, the final score was 73-36. Emery led 19-4 after the first quarter and 32-16 at the half with the non-starters all seeing playing time. Emery then won the third quarter 26-2 with Gunnison Valley taking the final period 16-15.
Kacelyn Toomer scored 17 points and Megan Jensen scored 16 points to lead the team. Kinlee Toomer scored 13 points and Bailey Huggard scored 10 points to also finish in double figures. Lainee Jensen scored 7 points. Also scoring for the Lady Spartans were Kira Saling with 4 points, Morgan Hurdsman and Tayden Nielson with 2 points each and Adri Childs and Ambree Bennett each scored 1 point.
